Day 12-Godswill Ugwa

Have you ever thought about having a career in the anime world? The industry is a vast, filled with multiple positions and people who love anime just as much as we do. For #28DaysofBlackAnime I had the pleasure to interview Godswill Ugwa, Funimation‘s social media coordinator.

The Interview

DS: How did you get into anime?

GU: I technically got into anime with Toonami (who didn’t watch DBZ?), but I would say I really got into anime for anime sake with a G4 block called “anime unleashed” at about 7th grade. At that time I saw my first anime movie in theaters, Howl’s Moving Castle. I really did a deep dive into anime in my freshman year of college where my roommate and neighbors were really about it.

DS: What made you decide to work in the industry?

GU: Lol it was cool! I didn’t really decide to work in the industry to be honest. I was planning to work in healthcare but anime was a fun thing I did on the side. Apparently my work in the scene showed for itself and I got lucky enough that I got an interview at Funimation.

DS: What would you say is the best part of your job?

GU: My favorite bit of my job is meeting fans online or in person. I’m really happy to see fans get excited and passionate for this medium and nerd culture. I’m most happy to be at the forefront of making anime a more viable medium.

DS: What do you foresee in the future with anime and black community? For example the fandom, storylines, animators, working in the industry etc.

GU: I’m seeing more black people openly share their love for anime which is amazing. They will be the ones to dictate what’s cool and what’s not as they have done with many other creative mediums. As that happens, I’m expecting more diversity in anime characters which is bringing more black voice actors and creatives who work in the industry! There are already quite a few black engineers, marketers, voice actors, editors, and more at Funimation.
I’m going through Recovery of an MMO Junkie, Made in Abyss, Star Blazers 2199, Dragon Ball Super, One Piece, Garo Vanishing Line, Ancient Magus Bride, Black Clover, Pop Team Epic, Dagashi Kashi, Hajime no Ippo, Gintama, Overlord, Darling in the Franxx, and I just finished Devilman Crybaby. Whew that’s a lot looking at it haha
